John Keane - Teaching, General Teaching Projects in Peru
Susan and I taught at the Agropecurario School in Calca in the magnificent Sacred Valley. Our school was basic, no textbooks just blackboard, chalk, rickety chairs and desks. Like kids all over the world there were the good, the not so good and the indifferent, giving you a challenge that was enjoyable, rewarding and frustrating in turns. Timetables were often disrupted by Fiesta days, when there would be no school and the whole town let its hair down. Each school had its own band, some of whom were in desperate need of music teachers!
Life is laid back, sometimes chaotic, but you learn to go with the flow. Maybe they have got it right. Travel is easy and cheap (if cramped) and there are numerous excellent sites to visit and good food and night life in Cusco. There are plenty of opportunities to meet and socialise with other volunteers. Peru is an experience we would not have missed for the world. For those who enjoy a challenge, adventure and a learning experience, it's a must.
