Journalism volunteers practice their interviewing skills as part of their project in Romania

What will I do at my Journalism placement in Romania?

As a Journalism intern in Romania, you’ll work at a cultural magazine in Brasov. Your daily tasks will be to:

  • Produce articles for the English section of the magazine
  • Interview locals and gather research for stories
  • Contribute online articles to Voices of the World
  • Get to know other teenagers from around the world during planned socials and weekend trips

Your work will focus mainly on the following:

Produce articles for the English section of the magazine

You’ll produce content for the dedicated English section of Romanian magazine, Satul (which translates to “The Village”). You’ll take the lead for your articles but your supervisor and local journalists will be there to guide and assist you during the process. They’ll also ensure your articles are in line with the magazine communication strategy.

Interview locals and gather research for stories

A vital part of the writing process is gathering accurate information to include in your articles. You’ll have the chance to visit traditional Romanian villages during your time abroad. This will give you the opportunity to learn more about the Romanian culture, talk to locals, gather stories, and share them with the community.

Contribute online articles to ‘Voices of the World’

You’ll get to expand your writing capabilities by contributing to Voices of the World, an online publication for aspiring young journalists. This publication covers many topics, views, and thoughts on global issues. By doing so, you’ll learn more about global issues and how to express your views better.

Get to know other teenagers from around the world during planned socials and weekend trips

This internship isn’t all work and no play. There is plenty of time for you to socialise with the other interns during planned social activities and weekend trips. Your supervisor will organise all these events for you so that you can get the most out of your trip. You may find yourself hiking and picnicking in the mountains, ice skating, or exploring Dracula’s castle!

Who are our partners for the Journalism placements in Romania for high school students?

Satul

As an intern, you’ll work at the print magazine, Satul (“The Village”).

The magazine was created to keep the cultural spirit of Romania alive by sharing stories in English and Romanian. The magazine also covers news about various traditions that have survived and adapted as the years have gone by.

Voices of the World

You will also be working with Voices of the World. This is an initiative that allows young people, especially those from developing countries, to learn about journalism. During these classes, they will learn journalistic practices like how to research, write, edit, interview, etc. It’s also a great opportunity to publish their work online and experience cultural exchange.

Where will I be working on my Journalism internship in Romania for teenagers?

Brasov

Our Journalism internship in Romania for teenagers is based in the ancient city of Brasov. During this time, you’ll write articles for the English section of the Romanian magazine, Satul.

When you walk through the city you’ll see old stone walls, terracotta-tiled roofs, and medieval gateways. You may feel like you are going back in time but the town square is still thriving with life. The summer time is the most active, with open markets and numerous restaurants leading onto the square.

Our supervisors have plenty social activities planned for you when you aren’t relaxing with your host family or the other interns. You’ll hike through the vast mountainscape or visit Bran Castle, home to the infamous Dracula.
