Is teaching English as a volunteer in India right for me?

This project is ideal for you if you love teaching and interacting with kids. Your classes will be run solely by volunteers with the guidance and support from our local team. This is a great way to gain teaching experience or to simply figure out if teaching is a career you wish to pursue.

Not only does this project show you the ropes of teaching, but it’s also a great addition to your CV. Besides the teaching work experience in India, you’ll also learn organisational skills, personal planning, and communication skills. This will give you plenty to talk about in future job or university applications.

No previous teaching experience is required as our staff will give you sufficient training and assistance. However, you’ll still need an intermediate English level to have a meaningful impact on this project. The local staff will run regular workshops to keep your skills sharp and prepared.

The Childcare Project runs all year round for a minimum of two weeks at a time. However, the longer you stay the more of an impact you’ll have.

The project runs all year round, you can start on any day, and it’s fully supervised. So all you need to do is decide on some dates, complete our application form with a £195 deposit and we’ll take care of the rest.

Teach basic English skills like reading, writing, and speaking

Some of the government schools in Fort Kochi lack the resources and staff to ensure every child reaches their maximum potential, especially when it comes to English. With your help, we’ve set up English classes to cater to the kids who would otherwise not learn these skills. You and the other volunteers will run the classes with the support of our local staff. As someone with at least an intermediate level in the language you’ll be a great help in demonstrating conversations, and showing basic sentences.

Plan your lessons and share ideas with other volunteers

Due to the limited English ability of local teachers, these lessons will be run solely by you and the other volunteers. This means you’ll have to do your own lesson planning with the guidance of our staff. This is the perfect place to let your creativity shine through and create different English lesson plans. You’ll also have full access to our teaching database full of activities and ideas. However, it’s up to you to create fun, interactive lessons. If you prefer, you can even do reading sessions as part of your lesson.

Create teaching resources that can be used during class and by future volunteers

In public schools, there are limited teaching resources due to a lack of funding.  You can create flashcards, posters, alphabets, word-associations, puzzles, or just fun verbal games. The classroom is your oyster, and your creativity is your pearl! These resources can even be used by future volunteers after you’ve left.

Where in India will I be working?

You’ll be based in the coastal region of Kochi, a city in the state of Kerala. Despite the struggling public schools, where you’ll be helping out, the coastal areas boast some impressive high-rise buildings and impressive architecture.

Since its inception as a coastal town, many travellers have frequented Kochi as traders and tourists. Because of its popularity all sorts of fun activities started to take form. Some of the things you can do in Kochi are boat and cultural tours, art gallery and museum visits, and yoga of course!

The seaside region is bustling with energy and culture, ready for you to soak it all in. What more could an adventurous volunteer want?

Airport pickup, flights and visas

Our projects are based in Kochi. When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our India Arrival Procedures page

A typical day on the Teaching Project in India

You’ll start your day by having breakfast with your fellow volunteers in Fort Kochi. After getting ready and becoming more familiar with them, you’ll head off with your arranged transport for your first day of teaching. Our staff will accompany you on your first day so that you feel comfortable with the journey.

Before your lessons start for the day, you can go over your lesson plan and make sure you’re prepared. Your first classes will start at 10am until 12pm. After that you’ll have a break with the other volunteers where you can grab something to eat. Enjoy your meal and relax before your next classes start at 2:30pm.

With the help of your fellow volunteers, you’ll conclude class and head back to the India offices for your lesson planning. You and the other volunteers will share ideas and stories of the day to help make the next one equally fruitful, if not more.

Besides planning for the next day, there will also be time to head out and explore. There’ll be more than enough time to visit places and discover what Kochi has to offer after class and over the weekend. Perhaps consider a bamboo rafting adventure or watching a cultural play. The local staff will also host events to help you meet volunteers doing other projects in India.

What are the aims and impact of volunteer teaching in India?

The goal of this project is to give children in Kochi an opportunity to improve their English skills. This can be done by improving their writing, reading, or speaking in English. It may seem natural to some of us, but many of them do not have the opportunity to practice English in their daily lives.

Due to resources being spread thin in Kochi government-run schools, many of the teachers do not have the skills necessary to teach English. Because of the need in the area, we set up English classes run solely by volunteers and our staff. This will help improve English skills and encourage learning in primary schools.

By volunteering as an English teacher in India, you’ll be able to help improve the English skills and their communication in a global language.

Management plans

India has so much to offer, from its beautiful coastal shores and meditative forests to its spicy delicacies and colourful markets. You'll be in awe by the organised chaos of transport and people, and amazed by local landmarks and temples that stand tall above the city.

In Kerala, you can experience all this and more. It's famous as one of India's most serene states coupled with the soothing flow of the Backwater canal system that runs through communities.

When you aren't exploring the surrounding areas, you can find your inner zen in a country known for its yoga practice. Improve your yoga technique or start from scratch. No matter your skill level, you'll take away great tips and techniques.

Our local staff will also facilitate regular social activities so that you can get to know volunteers and interns from other projects too. This is a great way to make an international group of friends who you can travel with during your trip.
